Brunch and Cake in Barcelona, Spain

Brunch and Cake is the most over-the-top, outrageous brunch spot I've ever eaten at. And that's why I love it. Isn't that the point of brunch? Eat a plate of dessert disguised as a french toast, while sipping four different drinks, all as you nurse your mid-day hangover in the sunshine? That's what brunch is for! And Brunch and Cake does it perfectly.
Brunch and Cake has several locations - I fancy the calmer location in Eixample over the more crowded location near the water in Barceloneta - but they all offer the same menu, which is the main attraction. The menu at Brunch and Cake it silly and whimsical and fun, which again, is the whole damn point of brunch.
As the name suggests, there's an entire section of the menu dedicated to cakes. Theres everything from the classics like red velvet and carrot cake, to the more experimental, like ricotta cheesecake, blackberry white chocolate eclair, or pastel de nata with mascarpone, lemon curd, and lavender. Opt for a cupcake if you want to save room for entrees.

The mains are just as inventive. The "supersandwich" comes with a side of guacamole, but instead of serving the guac in a plain dish, it comes in a syringe. Yes. A syringe. You get the joy of shooting guacamole into your sandwich with a syringe, because why not? Similarly, my first time eating here about 10 years ago, my friend's side of fruit came in a plastic beach shovel placed perfectly on her plate. There were brown sugar crumbs surrounding her sweet entree, which made it look exactly like a cute beach scene.

In a fun way, unless you stalk Brunch and Cake's Instagram, these little quirks usually take you by surprise, which makes it even more fun. It's like when the waiter brings out your fajitas at a Mexican restaurant and the sounds of the sizzle makes everyone's head turn. At Brunch and Cake, when the wait staff brings something from the kitchen, everyone's eyes dart to see what insanity awaits.
Presentation is a theme for everything on the menu. The acai bowls and smoothies look like an artists palette exploded - leaving behind colorful, joyful shards of fresh fruit and pops of color. Pink dragonfruits, yellow mangoes, thick strips of coconut, and edible flowers adorn each smoothie bowl.
Does this highly-Instagrammable experience mean that you'll probably be waiting in line with a few selfie-stick influencers? Maybe. But go a little on the earlier side when they open (around 8-9am depending on location). The Spanish go out late and sleep in late, and the young tourists who went clubbing the night before won't be up for another four hours.
Their website says their food is served "just like Grandma would" to which I say - who was your grandmother!? She's crazy - but fun.
